Classic Malts

An early morning journey to Oban to the Classic Malts event to represent HWDT. Registration for the yachts started at 9:30, but it was a very slow start and not many people seemed interested in talking to us. We hoped to make people aware of all the marine animals they might see in the next two weeks as they sail up to Skye, then back south to Islay. We hope they will record their sightings and then send them to HWDT, as our community sightings program is a vital part of the cetacean distribution research. Around noon, news of Common Dolphins in the Harbour had me running down to see them for myself. More people began to arrive for registration in the afternoon and we actually got to discuss the wonderful world of the Hebrides. Once registration ended, we packed up our gear a little later than planned and rushed back to the ferry terminal to store our gear and go to Tesco for some grocery shopping for Silurian. No lockers were available so I had to stay with the gear at CalMac, while Morven went to Tesco. Luckily the 4:00 ferry was a bit late and no one got left behind! Beautiful afternoon ferry back to Mull, seeing several Harbour Porpoise near the Lismore Lighthouse. Caught the bus back to Tobermory. Later in the evening went for a fantastic hike, almost disappearing into the taller-than-me bracken and navigating climbing over fences! I didn't actually see the sunset, but the clouds and sky above were a-glow in pinks, reds, purples, and oranges. (and no ticks found yet!).
