This morning started early, with the water like glass and the sky clear. Out on the boat for a whale survey. Once we had traveled some distance, we cut the engine and put the hydrophone down to hear if any whales, either humpback or orcas could be heard. For a few moments all seemed quiet, then the magical call of orca could be heard. The musical notes make the heart soar and your eyes light up and began to scan the horizon for any sign of these magical whales. Using binoculars, I scan the horizon, when the prized blow, a cloud of exhaled mist rises in the distance, followed by many more. The next three hours can only be described as beyond belief and truly awesome and humbling experience. At one point it was impossible to know which way to look as orcas puffed and surfaced in every direction. For a few moments it seemed they all disappeared, when they reappeared in a crescent behind the boat, and they sat still on the surface, each of us gazing at each other, curious of the world each other occupies. I will never forget this special day.
